In Newcastle do I have to apply for transport for my child?
Yes. In March we will be told which school your child has been allocated a place at. If your child is entitled to free school transport we will send you a Transport Application Form during April or May. It is important you return the form as soon as possible.
Are some people entitled to free school travel?
Yes, some people are - to see if you are entitled, go to the Newcastle City Council website using the links tab.
Is there any help with travel for 16-19 year olds who are still in study?
The Newcastle City Council website (available via the links tab) has a special section for 16-19 year olds with the most up to date information. It is best to start there to find out what help is available. The Nexus site also has some useful information particularly if you are at College.
If I am in education can I get a travel pass?
If you are under 16 and live in Tyne and Wear you are entitled to an Under 16 card. Details of how to apply for one are on the Nexus website (see the links section). The card allows you to travel at a concessionary child fare.
What should I do if I have a learning difficulty and /or disability?
A student with Special Educational Needs they cannot access public transport can be provided with free transport. However, this can only occur if they have a specific transport requirement which is specified in the Statement of Special Educational Need and is supported by a referral from your Connexions Adviser. Speak with your Connexions Adviser for further information.
Where can I find out about transport times?
www.travelinenortheast.info is probably the most useful source of information on all forms of public transport. You can check out all sorts of details either on the website or by phoning them on 0871 200 2233.
You can use Google Maps to plan routes to places you need to get to. As well as maps and directions, you can also see street-level and aerial photographs.
