What is an Adult Learning Grant?

If you are over 19 and are going back to study for your first Level 2 or Level 3 qualification then you may be able to get £30 a week to help with costs whilst your studying. Check out all the facts at: www.direct.gov.uk.

What are Dance and Drama Awards?

Dance and Drama Awards are available from 22 private dance and drama schools in England. Whether you qualify depends on your age nationality or residency status. For more information go to Direct.gov.uk or speak to a Connexions Personal Adviser.

Where can I get advice on benefits?

The benefits system is very complex and each individuals circumstances needs to be assessed. Connexions and the Job Centre will be able to give you information on what you might be entitled to. In the links section you will also find some useful websites.

Can I still receive child benefit after my child has finished year 11?

Usually child benefit stops when a young person reaches 16. However if they continue in relevant eduction or training you may be able to continue claiming. In the link section click on HM Custom and Revenue for the most up to date information.

How can I work out my budget?

You need to work out how much money you get each week (earnings) and then see what essentials (such as transport)you have to spend your money on (outgoings). Then you should be able to see what you have left over for non-essential things like going out. To help you work this out you can use this Money Made Clear budget calculator.

How do I open a bank account?

You will need to decide which bank you would like to join first of all and then discuss opening an account with them. You will usually need to be able to prove who you are, where you live and complete a form. If you need an account as you have started work or training and are having problems opening one, please speak to your Connexions Adviser. The Direct.gov site also has some useful information on opening and running bank accounts.
