ITV News Group (ING) INTERNSHIP

Ever thought about a career in the media industry or wondered how stories are selected and put together for the news but didn't know how to find out?

ITV are offering 9 individuals across the country the chance to do up to 6 weeks paid placement in one of their regional newsrooms before the end of 2011. It's called the ITV News Group Internship. There's one placement in each of the following locations - Gateshead, Manchester, Leeds, Cardiff, Birmingham, Norwich, Bristol, Southampton and London.

We know that opportunities to gain experience in TV are rare and that it doesn't always feel like everyone gets an equal chance to take advantage of them. We also know that the people who work for us don't always reflect the many voices and interests of our local communities so we've created these opportunities to encourage applications from individuals who feel their voice isn't often heard or who have something unique to offer; and hopefully help people decide whether a career in the media is for them.

During the 6 weeks, you'll be able to get a flavour of a number of different roles within the department depending on your interests - that might be Technical roles, Admin Support roles or Journalist roles. Unfortunately we're not looking for would be presenters!

You can apply for the scheme if you are 18 or over and have the energy and enthusiasm to thrive in a newsroom environment and will make the most of the opportunity. You don't need any qualifications but you'll get more out of the placement if you're interested in regional news. If you're interested in the Internship, you'll need to complete our straightforward application form. It's useful if you can get someone else to confirm that you'd be a good candidate, but don't worry if you can't. Send the form back to our Head of News Lucy West by Wednesday 31st August 2011 and if we think the Internship could be right for you we might ask you and a few others to come and meet some of our team for a chat so that we can decide who to offer the placement to.

If you require the application form in any other format due to accessibility needs then just let us know.

If you're offered a 2011 Internship in one of the newsrooms, we'll agree a start date with you and we'll pay you the national minimum wage for the duration of the placement.

At the end of the placement, we might ask you to join our Diversity Panel so that you can continue to contribute to and comment on how we make regional news in your area.

EMA is changing!

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is currently paid to some young people who go onto college, Sixth Form or training courses after they leave Year 11. Eligibility, and the amount paid, depends on household income.

In October 2010 the government announced that EMA was changing and no new applications for the allowance will be taken after 31st December 2010. Connexions has application forms for those who still need to apply and we are keen to try to ensure that any young person who has left school in 2009 or 2010, or anyone whose circumstances have perhaps changed since they first applied, makes an application in time to be considered.

Connexions would welcome contact from parents, guardians, other professional colleagues or young people themselves either in person or by telephone to see how we can help. In order to make sure that the form is received in time, please make sure that you get in touch with us before 17th December 2010.

Please call into the Connexions Office in Percy Street or call 0191 277 1943 for further help and advice.

Website Live

A date has been set for the Newcastle Routes website to go live. The new site is scheduled to go live on the 28th of May.

Website Live

Connexions Newcastle Prospectus lead, Ann Graham. "Getting the new site up and running has been a team effort. We have listened to all prospectus partners and believe we have a site that will help learners to track down the information they need as quickly as possible."

The Prospectus not only allows young people to find courses, providers and related information, it also supports a common application process or CAP.

DCSF Prospectus and CAP

DCSF published a web page for young people and parents back in 2009 telling them about their plans to develop 14-19 prospectuses and a post-16 common application process (CAP).

£1.7 million was made available for each of the next three years starting this financial year to help areas develop the prospectus. All areas have to develop a post-16 CAP linked to the 14-19 Prospectus by 2010.
